British passport holder travelling from Hong Kong to Chengdu arriving at 2330hr Thursday then fly to London departing Chengdu 1210hrs on Monday, if i wait at the airport for extra 30 minutes on arriving in Chengdu, can I use the 72 hours visa free programme since the count down starts at 00:01 the following midnight i.e. Saturday 00:01?

Paddy, if you arrive at 2330hr Thursday, the 72 hours will start from 00:00 on Friday. It means that you should leave before 23:59 on Sunday. I’m afraid you cannot enjoy the 72 hour free transit then. You need to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type in advance.
