What is it exactly that I need to do to apply for an overnight  stay with relatives living near Bejing Airport when flying to Japan from USA on China Air. Where do I find and fill form for this round trip with stop overnight layover?

Fusion, if you hold USA passport, you will be eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. When you arrive at Beijing airport, you can just go to the immigration counter and apply for a temporary stay permit and you will get a stamp on your passport. After, you can go out of the airport to your relatives’ home and stay there for a night.
