About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use the free transit, even if I roundtrip from Taiwan?

For example, I am a working resident in Taiwan (from America), and want to go to for a couple days to Shanghai without a China visa.

Tom, if you travel like Taiwan-Shanghai-Taiwan, you cannot make use of the free transit. You need to apply for a tourist L type in advance. Actually, you can travel like this Taiwan-HK-Shanghai-Taiwan and if you stay in Shanghai for less than 144 hours, you will be eligible for the free transit in Shanghai.
