About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong than Shanghai than Frankfurt

friend of mine is going to come to China through Shanghai Pudong and stay for 2 weeks. We would like to visit Hong Kong - but unfortunately he get only 1 entry visa even if he applied for 2. Is it possible to use the 72 hours (or if I read correctly actually should be 144 for Shanghai and Jiangsu) free transit if we come back on Sunday and than his flight back to Germany is on Thursday 5 minutes after midnight?

Another question is - is it a problem that the ticket´s are separated? because the one to/from Shanghai/Germany paid a company but the one Shanghai/HongKong we are going to pay ourselves.

And the last but not least question is - how sure we can be about this free transit? as I am living in China for a longer time I know that a lot of times everything depends on the mood of the clerk sitting behind the desk.

thanks for the help

1. Yes if he´s flying HK - Shanghai - Germany he´s fine for the 144h twov.

2. It´s no problem to fly on 2 different tickets.

3. You can never be sure for 100%.
The immigration can deny you to immigrate at any time.
Although you hold a visa it doesn´t mean you can enter China for 100%.
But his schedule is fine, I can see no reason to deny the 144h twov.
