About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travel From Frankfurt to Australia

Hello, I would really appreciate it if you would help me with the following situation.

I am an Iranian passport holder, who is temporary living in Germany. I booked a flight From Frankfurt to Australia that has a layover In Beijing (PEK). One way layover is 13 hours and 45 minutes, and for the return I have about 8 hours layover. I just checked and all arrival and departures take place in Beijing (PEK), Terminal 3. I do not intend to leave the airport if I am not required to do so. I have three questions:

1. Do I have to collect my luggage in PEK? if yes, will I need to apply for visa-exemption for collecting luggage and against checking in?

2. As Iran id among the exceptions listed here, does the limitation for Iranian apply in my case? for example, If I am required to apply for 24-hour visa, I am eligible to do so?

3. I have an Australian visa and this is for the first time that I want to travel there. the visa is not printed on my passport. The embassy just emailed me a letter that show this at the border, and then everything is ok. I do not have any concerns for the Australia border (as I know the process), but can it be a problem in Beijing?

The first and the most important detail is that you are perfectly and definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit on your both journeys through Beijing and you do not need any kind of visa. Now, to your questions:

1. If you are traveling on a single (through) ticket that was bought as one journey with a transfer in Beijing, you will not have to collect your luggage and you will just spend your time in Beijing transit (airside) area waiting for your onward flight. However, to be 100% certain about this detail, you will just inform you about this detail at the time of your check-in in Frankfurt and in Australia on your way back to Frankfurt. It is not important even if you will have to collect your luggage because there is a non visa solution for something like this.

2. Iran is actually not an exception, but only two airports (Xiamen and Urumqi) require a transit visa for Iranians... However, this is not the case in Beijing. You will travel through Beijing absolutely visa free.

3. You will print out your visa that was sent to you via email by the Australian embassy. You should be aware that it is not the Chinese authorities that could cause you a problem, but I am more concerned about the German authorities because they are those that will allow you to board the plane. When you arrive in Beijing, the Chinese authorities will just accept the decision of the German authorities and will allow you to proceed to Australia. However, you should have that Australian embassy email in hard copy and at hand.

By the way, during your longer layover, you can, if you want, apply for a temporary entry permit at transit counter at Beijing airport in order to be allowed to explore the city. This application is free of charge, but you really do not know the outcome until they tell you. So, you can try :)
