About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US Citizen Question: USA-->Seoul--> Shanghai -->USA

Hello, I just learned I will be going to China on an extra leg of a trip and may not have time to get a visa. If I travel from the USA to Seoul to Shanghai (for less than 72 hrs), would I require an entry permit? Also, how complicated is it to establish the 72 hr free transit once in China? Many thanks!

Kate, yes, you will be able to enjoy the 72 hour free transit in Shanghai if you travel like that. And it is easy to establish the 72 hour free transit in China. You just need to inform the airline that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane in Korea. After arriving at Shanghai airport, you can just go to the transit counter to apply for the 72 hour free transit.

I have very similar Korean Air itinerary ( LAX-ICN-PVG-LAX) but there's no direct flight from Shanghai to LAX that Korean Air offers. I have to change plane in ICN on the way back to LAX with 2-hour layover. Do I need to find a direct flight out of Shanghai to get a Chinese transit visa?
