About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arriving Shanghai via cruise ship from Japan

and staying in port for 18 hours before going onto another port in Japan. Is it safe to assume that I am in this 144 hour exempt program and will be allowed to leave the ship without having to obtain a Chinese visa

Derek, because the ship will go back to Japan after staying in Shanghai, you cannot enjoy the free transit in Shanghai. You should apply for a tourist L type beforehand.

Thank you for your response Pablo. Because I have been to Shanghai before I am thinking of just remaining on board the ship on the Shanghai port day. Do you think that should be ok as I will not be setting foot into China? Chinese embassy and time is now a problem as I leave in 2 weeks

Actually, if you don’t disembark from the cruise, it may be okay, but you'd better confirm that with the cruise ship company. Otherwise, you may be refused to board.
