About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am doing a "mileage run" to Shanghai departing LAX arrive in Shanghai

return to LAX with a 8 hour layover - will this qualify?

If so, you are not eligible for the free transit in Shanghai because you fly back to LAX after staying in Shanghai.
