About:China Visa Application in USA

My friend and I have a 17 hour layover overnight in Shanghai on our way to Thailand.

Will we need a visa if we would like to reserve a hotel room near the airport? Is that fee $140?

You can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit if you travel like that, so no entry permit is needed. You just need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the airport and then you can stay at a hotel near the airport. The stay permit is free of charge.
