About:China Train

I want a train from Shanghai to Beijing but stop over somewhere during that trip? Possible?

I want to catch a ride from Shanghai to Beijing but would like to do it stopping somewhere in between to look around. Is this possible? Where would you suggest?
I am happy to do it in either a day and lock our luggage in a railway station locker if possible or do an overnight stay somewhere.
All suggestions very much appreciated. It will be early December.

There are so many cities along the way for your option like Suzhou, Jinan etc. The important is that you need to buy the ticket separately for each part of the trip. Holding one ticket from Shanghai to Beijing do not allowed to continue the trip after you get off from halfway.
