About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

to confirm, there must be a 2 stops on either end of China?

It seems that Taiwan is considered a different country for this free transit visa. but to confirm there must be 2 stops within a 10 day period or it's that you cannot stay in China for more than 10 days?
I can't tell if my itinerary would be eligible

Day 1: LAX to Taiwan
Day 2: Taiwan to Manila
Day 7: Manila to Taiwan
Day 14: Taiwan to China
Day 18: China to Taiwan
(so only 4 or 5 days in China itself)
Day 19: Taiwan to LAX

Do the additional Manila stops count for the additional countries or it would not because of the Taiwan stop back before heading to China and it all not within 10 days, even though I intend to only be in China less than 10 days?

Unfortunately, your itinerary is not eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit requires that the immediate stops before and after mainland China in two (2) different countries or eligible territories. As you can see, both of your immediate points are located in the single eligible territory - Taiwan and that is not allowed. In other words if you plan to retain your original itinerary you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance.

If you could only alter / adapt your itinerary to look like:

Los Angeles - Taiwan - Manila (the Philippines) - mainland China - Taiwan - Los Angeles

Your itinerary would be valid and acceptable because the immediate points are located in two (2) different countries / eligible territories, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Also, it is important to understand that 10 days allowed to stay under 240 hour visa free transit are counted only during your stay in mainland China and not in other countries or territories like Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). So, when you enter mainland China the clock starts ticking and the count down begins. When you are in the Philippines or Taiwan the clock is not ticking.

thank you, this is extremely helpful. So if I am understanding correctly, there must be 2 countries prior OR after China. So the additional stop in Taiwan from Manila would reset my country counter before China back to 1 for Taiwan?

Would an additional stop in Japan between Taiwan and China then make this valid, as I will need to be in Taiwan for a few days after Manila.

Day 14: Japan to China

You have perfectly understood. This is the segment that matters:

Japan -> mainland China -> Taiwan

As you can see, the immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries / eligible territories and exactly this makes you eligible for 240 hour visa free transit. Have a nice visit to China.
