Eric, you cannot enjoy free transit if you travel like that because you will stop in both Beijing and Shanghai. You need to apply for a tourist L type or transit G type for your entry to Beijing and Shanghai.

I'm confused. It is not like I'm visiting Beijing, I have a 2.5 layover in Beijing on my way to Shanghai.Are you saying then that the only way to enjoy 144 hour free visit to shanghai is to have a direct flight to shanghai? Please advise

Although it is not like you will visit Beijing, you do have a stopover in Beijing and if so, you cannot enjoy free transit. The 144 hour free transit stipulates that you can only stop in Shanghai, Zhejiang or Jiangsu. If you have a direct flight to Shanghai, you can enjoy the free transit there.

My wife and I will be visiting Shanghai for 3.5 days before boarding a cruise ship in Shanghai.
