About:China Visa Application in USA

My wife and I will be visiting Shanghai for 3.5 days before boarding a cruise ship in Shanghai.

I will be arriving in Shanghai from the U.S by way of Beijing (layover at the airport for 2.5 hrs). From Shanghai I will be cruising to Japan and then to Hong Kong and then to Singapore where I will fly back to U.S. Do you see any need for me to get a visa to china or do you think I will qualify for free visit?

Eric, you cannot enjoy free transit if you travel like that because you will stop in both Beijing and Shanghai. You need to apply for a tourist L type or transit G type for your entry to Beijing and Shanghai.

I'm confused. It is not like I'm visiting Beijing, I have a 2.5 layover in Beijing on my way to Shanghai.
Are you saying then that the only way to enjoy 144 hour free visit to shanghai is to have a direct flight to shanghai?
Please advise

Although it is not like you will visit Beijing, you do have a stopover in Beijing and if so, you cannot enjoy free transit. The 144 hour free transit stipulates that you can only stop in Shanghai, Zhejiang or Jiangsu.
If you have a direct flight to Shanghai, you can enjoy the free transit there.
