We wish to spend some hours for a short sailing trip behind the Three Georges Dam to one of the smaller gorges in October, is it possible?

Do you mean the visit to the Three Little Gorges from Yichang? It is impossible to do such activity within a day, no mention that you only want to spend some hours. You may consider taking a cruise trip from Chongqing or Yichang, and there will be an onshore excursion to the smaller gorges during the trip.
