Angela, may I know which type of residence permit you hold? If you hold residence permit for work purpose, you need to provide those documents for the extension: your passport, a completed application form affixed with a half-length color photo, valid registration form of temporary residence, alien employment permit and labor contract, enterprise business license, and other documents required by the consular officers.
Usually, it costs CNY 400 if you extend for less than one year.

Angela, if you will finish your studies soon, I’m afraid you cannot extend your residence permit because you need to get relevant documents from the school. If you want to stay for some time after finishing your studies, you can try to change your student X type to tourist L type which may allow you to stay for 30 days in PRC.
