Transit after stopover in Beijing

A US citizen, I am flying from US through Beijing to Guangzhou. I spend one night in Guangzhou and then fly on to Hong Kong the next day. May I use the 72 hour free transit or must I apply for a visa through the consulate.

Suzanne, you cannot enjoy the 72 hour free transit because you will stop in both Beijing and Guangzhou.
But if your total layover time in Beijing and Guangzhou is less than 24 hours, you can make use of the 24 hour direct transit. No entry permit will be needed then.
