About:China Visa Exemption

Travel from New Zealand to Hong Kong to Shenzhen then return to Hong Kong- then New Zealand

Hi do I need visa for the above? Or can I gain temporary entry?

Chris, you can possibly get a VOA in Shenzhen and it will allow you to stay for less than 5 days in Shenzhen. In this case, you don’t need to apply for an entry permit beforehand.
