About:China Visa Exemption

Am I able to leave the airport and come back without having to apply for a visa?

I am a US resident, planning to take a trip to Asia. I might have a layover in Shanghai for 17 hours.

Christine, if you will leave Shanghai for a country different from the country of your departure, you can use the free transit. And duringt the transit period, you can leave the airport and come back. You only need to apply for a temporary stay permit.
