About:Chinese Temporary Residence Permit

Can my employer apply for a temporary residence permit while I currently hold one as a student?

I recently completed my MBA in August here in Shanghai. I have a residence permit (as a student) which runs till end of Fen 2017. I currently have a job offer with a firm here in Shanghai. Will they be able to apply for a new residence permit (which states I am an employee) and have the old student permit cancelled?

If you can convert the student X type to a work Z type, it is possible for you to cancel your student residence permit and get an employee residence permit.
