About:China Visa Exemption

We are planning a 4 day cruise from Shanghai.

We we qualify for the Visa exemption if we are flying return from Bangkok. Then departing on a Celebrity cruise from Shanghai, returning to the cruise port in Shanghai 4 days later, then proceeding to the Airport for a return to BKK.
We are one Canadian citizen and One Thai national.

First, Thailand passport holders cannot enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
Second, you mean you will travel like this Bangkok-Shanghai-Bangkok? If yes, the travel route is not eligible for the 144 hour free transit.
So you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance for this journey.
