About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Transiting through Shanghai and Kunming

I am planning to fly from San Francisco to Shanghai to Kunming to Kolkata using Chinese Eastern Airlines. Planning to stay in Kunming for a day. Can I get the 72 hour transit visa for Kunming, even though I have a layover in Shanghai for 3 hours. BTW I am a US citizen.

Ranjan, no, you cannot get the 72 hour free transit in Kunming because you will stop in Shanghai and Kunming.
But if your total layover time in Shanghai and Kunming is less than 24 hours, you are able to enjoy the 24 hour direct transit. In this case, you don’t need to apply for any entry permit.
