About:Shanghai Public Transportation Card

Can a debit/credit card be used both to pay and gain access to the Shanghai Metro system?

similar to London Underground? Thanks

No, credit card cannot be used to pay the metro. You need to buy ticket with cash for each ride, or you can buy a local transportation card, which can be used on bus and metro both.
