About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US citizen traveling from Chicago, IL to Shanghai Intl Airport (PVG),with a 15 hour layover,

then departing from PVG to Kunming Changshui (KMG) with a 24 hour layover, then departing KMG for Kathmandu, Nepal. Will I need visas if I leave either airport in China?
Is the 72 hour free transit my best choice? Where and when should I get the entry permit if it is necessary?
Thank you

Rosaline, actually you don't qualify for the 72h free transit because you stop over two Chinese cities. So you need to get a transit G type permit prior to your departure.
