About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 or less - visa??

Hi darling, Here is my travel plans: USA to Shanghi. Then train to Hangzhou. Then train back to Shanghi. Then flight back to US. All within 144 hours. Do I need an entry permit? OR do I need to return to US thru another country first? Or are we good to go without entry permit? Thanks - Mr. Ron

Ron, you need to return to US through another country in order to comply with the rules of 144-hour free transit.

Hello Tom,
Can you show me where it states that I must return to the US thru another country to be allowed to use the 144 hour "no visa" pass?

If you travel like this US-Shanghai/Hangzhou-HK/Macau-US, you will be able to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.

Hello Tom, What about US to Shanghi to Canada to US? Visa needed? Also, what is the difference btw 72 hours and 144 hour "no visa requirements"? Thank you. Ron

If so, you don’t need to apply for a visa either.
The 72 hour free transit is only applicable to those who travel by flight and transit in PRC for less than 72 hours.
However, the 144 hour free transit is applicable to those who travel by train, flight, bus or cruise and the transit time should be less than 144 hours. Currently, the 144 hour free transit is only applicable to Shanghai city, Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.

So, then what I am hearing is regardless of 72 or 144, if I travel from US to Shanghi, I MUST return to US thru another country, and Canada can be one of those countries, correct? Thank you! Ron

Yes, you cannot fly back to US directly; otherwise, your stopover in Shanghai won’t be a transit any more. But the 144 hour or 72 hour policy is for those who make a transit in PRC.
