Can I use a transit visa?

I have a flight into HK and a flight out of Guangzhou, I was intending to take a train from HK to GZ. I would stay in GZ for less than 24 hours so can I use the direct Transit? I am travelling on an Australian passport.

Vicki, if so, you can make use of the 24 hour direct transit in Guangzhou.

I just wanted to let you know, we travelled to Guangzhou from HK via train and we couldn't get a Transit visa. Immigration claimed they knew nothing about it and refused us entry. After much pleading I was given a visa because I had visited China before but my husband was sent back to Hong Kong on the next train and wasn't treated very pleasantly. I wouldn't risk going to China without a valid visa, it's likely you will be refused entry.
