I want to visit China soon as a tourist and I will purchase goods, What type of Visa do i need a South African? And, How much South African Rands (ZAR) do I need to have in my bank account as a standard?

You can apply for a tourist L type for that. There is no specific requirement for how much you should have in your bank saving account. You just need to make sure that you have enough money to cover your expenditures when you travel to PRC.
