About:Chinese Consulate in Melbourne

do we need a visa for china for less than 48hrs in Shanghai

flying to Beijing from Melbourne , then immediately to Shanghai.
3 days in Shanghai, then we board a ship to Japan.

Do we need an entry permit under the transit rules

Henry, since you will transit in two Chinese cities, you can't enjoy the 72 or 144 hour free transit policy, so the entry permit is required.
