About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello, someone is transmitting through Guangzhou Baiyun Airport.

Coming from Amsterdam and leaving for Sydney, both on China Southern airlines, do they need to go through immigration?
My partner is from Cuba and would not have a visa for China and is not eligible for visa free transit.
Would he be ok to transit through the airport in this way, staying in airport only?
Thanks! Louise

Louise, if your partner transits in PRC for not more than 24 hours, he can make use of the 24 hour direct transit. If so, no entry permit is needed. If he wants to leave the airport, he just needs to apply for a free temporary stay permit.
But if it is more than 24 hours, he needs to apply for a transit G type or tourist L type beforehand.
