US to Shanghai to Hong Kong to Shanghai

With the 144 hour free transit, can you leave Shanghai to travel to Hong Kong for two nights and then travel back to Shanghai, all within 144 hours. Is that allowed? or will be need a separate visa upon return from hong kong? US travelers. Thank you!

Ashley, when you travel like US-Shanghai (less than 144 hours)-HK-Shanghai, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai for your first entry.
If you fly to US after stopping in Shanghai for the second time, namely HK-Shanghai(less than 144 hours)-US, you can also enjoy the free transit.
