Renew HK tourist visa by leaving HK for a day

I am US citizen I'd like to stay in HK for 6 months. Can I renew a 90 day tourist entry permit by leaving HK for several days (to Japan, for example) and getting a "new" 90 day entry permit when I return?
Japan had such a provision (on 2013, at least).
Thank you.

Scott, you can leave HK to Japan and then re-enter HK, but the time gap shouldn’t be too short. Although there is no exact time gap requirement, you are advised not to re-enter just after several days.
