About:China Visa on Arrival

144 hour VOA Shanghai

Travelling through Shanghai (5 days) then on to Vietnam. I have an entry permit for Vietnam and booked onward ticket from Shanghai to Hanoi. Everyone here says I need an entry permit for PRC, even the company that handles visa applications for PRC (not the embassy or consulate anymore) if I will be longer than 72 hours. No one will listen that the rule has changed to allow 144 hours through Shanghai - neither my airline, the entry permit that issues entry permtis for PRC now. Is there anywhere I can get this in print to show this, as I don't want to be stuck at the airport either here or in Shanghai. Also, if I can get as far as Shanghai, how do I go about getting the VOA at the airport. I'm now short on time. Either I get the entry permit (ridiculously high prices now) or find the printed info and even if I do who'll believe it. My own government website for China says I must have an entry permit for longer than 72 hours and according to them, they update their info daily.

Nicole, if you travel like Canada-Shanghai (5 days) – Vietnam, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. You can try to search the 144 hour free transit information at the TIMATIC data base.
Before you board the plane in Canada, you need to inform the carrier that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai. After arriving at Shanghai airport, you can go to the transit counter by following the direction boards to apply for the 144 hour free transit.

Tried the TIMATIC data base and it still says I must have an entry permit (so much for them saying their info is updated 50 times a day and they still don't have info on a change from Jan. 30, 2016). I still can get nowhere with my air carrier or anyone else and every site I found/checked insists on entry permit. Anyone, any other ideas.
