Shanghai cruise stopover - will we need a visa

Our cruise in October takes in a day in Shanghai. The ship will be arriving in Shanghai from Nagasaki in Japan and will leave Shanghai for Okinawa in Japan before going on to Taipei and finally Hong Kong from where we will fly back to the UK. Do we need an entry permit for Shanghai or will we be covered by the new 144 hour waiver arrangements?

It cannot be covered by the 144 hour free transit. You need to apply for a tourist L type for your one-day stay in Shanghai.
