My F visa is 5 days too short, where and how should I prolong?

I am a Dutch student and I have completed a summer school in Beijing, so I have a F type. My F type has a duration of stay of 60 days, whereas I planned to stay in mainland China 65 days. Now I am in Shanghai, where I follow a business/cultural program. I cannot extend my type F because I am not a student of a Shanghai university and my inviter (a company) does not give the necessary invitation letter & tax form supporting document. Next week I want to travel for three weeks through mainland China, but I need to someway extend my F type with 5 more days in order to prevent illegal stay in China. I wanted to apply for a stay permit of 30 days in Shanghai but the PSB here says it is not possible. Am I eligible for the 144-hour free transit? I think it is OK for me to travel in Shanghai, Suzhou and Hangzhou in the last week. If not eligible, should I go to Hong Kong to apply for a L tourist type? My girlfriend and I, we only have a single entry permit but we fly back to Europe from mainland China (Shanghai), so do we need to apply for another tourist L type in HK in order to go back to Shanghai?

Sebastian, if you cannot get an invitation letter, I’m afraid you cannot extend your F type. Also, if you don’t have HK residence permit, it’s not easy for you to get mainland PRC entry permit from there.
As for the 144 hour free transit, the premise is that you fly to Shanghai from country A and then fly to Country B from Shanghai after staying there for less than 144 hours. So if you go to HK from Beijing and then enter Shanghai for less than 144 hours, after that, you will fly back to Europe, you can use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai and you can visit Suzhou and Hangzhou. In this case, you don’t need to apply for a tourist L type.

Hi Adrian,

Thanks for your reply! Do you know if I can get a stay permit of 30 days in Shanghai? And do I need supporting documents from the inviter or will an invitation letter do?

Do I really need a PRC entry permit if I already got a new L visa in HK and want to go back to Shanghai?

Ok so I guess I am eligible for a 144-hour visa. Thanks!

It’s possible for you to get another 30 days to stay in Shanghai. You need to get an invitation letter from the inviter.
If you get a tourist L type in HK, you can use the L type to enter PRC. There is no need to apply for any other entry permit.
If you travel like this HK-Shanghai-Europe and stay in Shanghai for less than 144 hours, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai and during the 144 hour free transit period, you can travel to Suzhou and Hangzhou.
