David, your employer cannot cancel your work Z type, but he can inform the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to cancel your residence permit. If so, you cannot use the residence permit to enter PRC any more once you exit. Just to play safe, you are advised to consult with your employer and find a way to avoid such a situation.
