About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I use 144 hour free transit if fly from US to Tokyo to Shanghai n then back Tokyo and back to US

I read that "You must be in transit to a third country (you may not return to the same country as the one that you came from)" but we're going roundtrip to Tokyo but then back to US. Does that mean we don't qualify and need to get a visa? Thanks!

Marie, if you travel like that, you don’t qualify for the 144 hour free transit. You should apply for a tourist L type in advance.
