About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

visa question for cruise passenger

Does a US passport holder sailing on a cruise ship starting in Japan and ending in Hong King with a stop in Shanghai (Baoshan), China need a Chinese entry permit? Or does the 144 hr. rule apply? The cruise passenger would take the cruise line organized sightseeing tour and not go on her own in Shanghai.

Kathy, because you will enter and exit mainland PRC by the same cruise ship, you may be required to apply for a tourist visa or transit visa in advance.
