Hi, I will be studying abroad and school starts on the 22nd. Will the student X1 type allow me to go 2 weeks sooner? Will I also be able to stay in China longer than my X1 type if I have family there?

Crystal, you can enter earlier before the school starts. But you need to register your entry within 24 hours after you enter PRC, and apply for the residence permit within 30 days after your entry. Usually, when your study ends, you need to exit. If you want to stay longer with your family, you can convert your X1 type to family type after it expires.
