About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does the 144 hour free transit apply if the third destination is Hong Kong?

As this country does not require a visa but is still classed as China?

We want to book a flight to Shanghai and then fly to Hong Kong before traveling home to the UK without needing an entry permit? Is this possible?

Amanda, your plan is fine. HK can is part of China, however, due to different immigration systems, it can be regarded as a third destination and HK doesn't require an entry permit for American tourists if the stay does not exceed 90 days.
