About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

From Seattle and back to Seattle

Hello,
I'm an American citizen and am looking at a quick, 60 hour trip to Shanghai. I'd be arriving from the U.S.A. and flying back to the U.S.A. less than three days later. Is this covered under this visa since I am not traveling to a third country?

Nick, if you travel like that, the free transit cannot cover your trip because according to the free transit policy, you should fly to a third country or region after stopping in Shanghai, but you fly back to US. So you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance.
If you travel back to HK or Macau after stopping in Shanghai, and then go to Seattle, you can use the free transit in Shanghai. In this case, your travel will be like this: Seattle-Shanghai-HK/Macau-Seattle.
