About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

I am flying from Seoul to Shanghai and then want to go to Beijing for 1 day.

Then depart from Shanghai to London. Is this domestic flight Shanghai/Beijing/Shanghai allowed if within the 72 hours?

Hamish, your trip to Beijing will make you ineligible for the free transit policy in Shanghai. Actually, if you don't have to go to Beijing and you just want to explore more cities, you can go to the nearby cities in Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provices. And you can still enjoy the 144-hour free transit policy that has been adopted in Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.
