Does a Canadian Citizen applying for a China Visa, require a Letter of Invitation

If the answer is yes, who supplies the Letter, and what is it's purpose. They are travelling with a Group Tour who say they have never been asked for a Letter of Invitation.

Sarah, the invitation letter is not a must. If they travel independently and they have relatives or friends in PRC, they can provide this letter so that they do not need to submit hotel bookings and round-trip tickets. If they can't provide this letter, it's fine. As you said, they are travelling with a group, so this letter is not required.
