visa free itinerary for american family

4 americans, Do we need an entry permit for Hong Kong?
We have plans to fly into Shanghai, spend 6 free days visiting jiangsu zhejiang and the Hanain Province, and then fly into Hong Kong for 6 more days? Is having a confirmed flight from Shanghai to Hong Kong considered exiting Shanghai? We will have standby flight from Hong Kong to London.

Is it better to fly into Hong Kong spend a few days, and exit out of shanghai?

Rebecca, you don't need the entry permit for Hong Kong.
During the six days, you can visit Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Shanghai, but you can't go to Hainan Province. Then you can fly to Hong Kong. The confirmed flight from Shanghai to HK can be considered as exiting Shanghai.
You can either first fly to HK then to Shanghai or first to HK then to Shanghai. No big difference between the two routes.

You can apply for an entry permit to go there from HK.
Or you can join a tourist group (at least 5 members) organized by international travel agencies that has set up and registered in Hainan Province. And then you can enjoy free entry to go there for a stay of not more than 15 days.
