Do I need a confirmed Air ticket for applying Chinese visa

Hello, I am a US citizen living in New Jersey and planning to go Beijing sometime in September. Is it required a confirmed air ticket reservation required to obtain a China Visa?

Gopal, you don't have to submit confirmed air ticket reservation, you can merely book the order and not pay until you get the tourist L type entry permit.
