About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise Stop

We are traveling to Shanghai from Japan for a one day stop there. We are US citizens and want to confirm that the 144 hours free transit applies to us. Must we get a visa for this stop of 12 hours?

Judy, may I know where you will go to after staying in Shanghai for 12 hours? If you will go to a third country or region rather than Japan, no entry permit is needed because you can use the 144 hour direct transit.
