About:China Visa Exemption

Hi, I'm holding a Malaysian passport traveling back to Malaysia from the USA

and i have a transit in Shanghai but with a different air ticket that i purchased separately, and have a layover of less than 24 hours. I may have to exit from the first plane in order to catch the next flight. Do i have to get a visa for that?

Chuck, according to what you said, you are eligible for 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. Separate tickets are okay.
If you need to get through the immigration inspection when you connect the flight, you can apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the airport. No entry permit is needed.
