X2 visa extension, how

I have recently registered as a student while I am still in South Africa and when I asked for how long my stay would be for, I was told I will only get a X2 since I registered for only 1 semester. I was told it is easy to extend my X2 if I should choose to continue studying, but after reading up on it here I have doubts that it will be easy. I don't think I will have 21000 RMB in a China bank account by the time I must extend my X2, since I will need to pay for my studies and live in China. What should I do then, maybe change to a different type? Thank you for your help!!

Gerard, theoretically speaking, the CNY 21,000 may not be needed. So it’s possible for you to extend your X2 type. You need to provide those documents: your passport, valid registration form of temporary residence, the application form affixed with a half-length color photo, admission letter from the school and other relevant documents the consular officers consider necessary. Afterwards, go to the exit and entry administration of the local PSB to extend it.

And if your study will last for more than one year, you can try to change X2 type to X1 type.

Thank you for your help. I wish I had applied for the X1 right from the start, but I couldn't, because I didn't register for 2 semesters. I cannot predict so far in advance what I will do. I am not even in China yet. I understand that the rules are there for a reason, it just makes my choices a bit more difficult. As you have advised, I will try to change it to a X1 when I decide to stay. I just hope that it won't be too difficult. Extending a X2 beyond 6 months does not seem possible unless I'm wrong or maybe it will be possible for one month at a time, but I don't want there to be too many extensions on my passport. I have heard they can deny you an entry permit in the future if you have too many extensions. Thank you once a again, very much :)
