Applying for a student visa in Japan

I'm a British travelling in China with a tourist visa before hopefully changing it for a student one for my semester abroad and combining it with a trip to Tokyo. If I go to Tokyo for two weeks, will that be enough time to get a student visa or will I need to be there longer, and is there anything else I would need to have?

Alex, it’s possible for you to get the student X type in Japan within your two-week visit there.
You just need to provide all the required documents for the X type such as your passport and its photocopy, the application form, a passport-style photo, the admission letter from the school in PRC, JW 201 or JW 202 form, and your entry permit to Japan.

I am in a similar situation. I want to change from a teaching visa (Z) to a student type (X) while in Tokyo. In this situation, is it necessary or preferred to apply through an agency? And if so, does anyone have experience with using one?
