About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Registering an existing Marriage

My Chinese wife and I got married in the UK. We then came to PRC for 6 months. As this was originally intended just to be a temporary thing, whilst my wife worked on a project here, I came here on a temporary 6 month X-2 student visa.

However, our situation has changed, and we would like to remain here longer. We are, therefore, looking at applying for the residence permit for a Foreign Spouse.

Can we do this in PRC?
Who would be able to certify our Marriage Certificate in PRC? (Would the UK Consulate in Shanghai be able to do this?)

And, as it is a valid UK Marriage Certificate in English, would we need to provide a Chinese translation of it?

Al, you can do that in PRC.
Your marriage needs to be notarized and attested by the notary public in UK and the embassy of PRC in UK. You don’t need to translate the marriage certificate if there is no special requirement.
