About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I will be in Beijing for 9 Hours, can I use the 72 hour visa to go and visit a friend?

I have a friend who wants to meet me for a picture in front of Chairman Mao's photo at the Forbidden City and eat lunch.

James, you are eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing, but you may be given the 24 hour direct transit there. In this case, you need to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the airport. Afterwards, you can leave the airport to meet your friend and eat lunch.
