Cruise port excursion entry

We are US passport holders and will take an Asia cruise which has port excursion to stay in Shanghai for about 8 hours does this entry qualify for 72 hrs Visa wave?

Well, your case doesn't suit the 72h visa-free transit, which is only for air passengers. However, as your stopover is only 8 hours, you are eligible for the 24h visa-free policy. Just apply for a stay permit at the customs of the port, and you will be allowed to tour the city.
