About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chicago to Beijing to Thailand

I'm planning on flying from Chicago on American Airlines to Beijing, staying for less than 72 hours and then continuing on to Thailand.

My concern is that I will get to Chicago and not have a visa (as you apply in the Beijing airport) and they will require it to board.. or something along those lines.

I have spoken with my airline several times and nobody seems to be able to confirm or deny this, in all my travels I have never needed an entry permit, so I am nervous about missing something in the process and having it mess up my trip.

Thank you for your help!

Grayson, according to what you said above, you are eligible for the 72 hour free transit in Beijing. In this case, you don’t need to provide the entry permit. You just need to provide your passport, the onward ticket and valid entry permit to Thailand (if required).
If you are still worried, you can print out the relevant 72 hour policy and show it to the airlines when you board the plane in Chicago if you are not allowed to board the flight.
